1868 1c Snow 4 Indian Head Cent PCGS AU 58 CAC Pop 1/1 *The Plant Doctor Collection*

$3,600.00
sold out

This is a very special coin that took me over 2 years to locate & is the last coin The Plant Doctor purchased before his most unfortunate passing. It is a spectacular AU 58 example with original mint red luster & the look of an uncirculated coin. It features light doubling on all letters of Liberty, a distinct die scratch behind the Y of Liberty extending to the ear. As well as another previously unnoted die scratch extending from the E of Liberty into the 2nd feather. It has a repunched date on all 4 digits, primarily seen in the upper loops of the 868.

This coin has a storied pedigree in addition to being one of the scarcest die varieties in the Indian Head cent series. It was found raw by this author on an eBay auction sale claiming it had come out of an estate. It graded PCGS AU 58 in 2021, making it a pop 1/0 at the time (there is now a recently graded MS 64 BN example). It was sold to Greg McKay for $1500, likely a cheap price considering the storied pedigree this coin carries to this day. Greg listed it for $5200 on his eBay page when selling his collection a few years later, and I was able to negotiate a $3,400 purchase price to place it into one of the finest Everyman Set collection for a private collector out of New Jersey. The New Jersey collector then sold his entire Everyman Set of AU 58s for $2,100,000 in 2023 in a massive transaction to the Tennessee Two Step Collection who is on the PCGS registry as THBarrow (the #1 retired Everyman Complete US Coin Type Set). Liz Coggan brokered the deal. The Tennessee Two Step collector then consigned this coin to Liz Coggan where she then sold this coin to The Plant Doctor for $3,200 in August of 2025, discounting it from her initial ask of $3,750. In the words of The Plant Doctor, “I wanted it!” He had me verify the pedigree to him which convinced him it was worthy of his collection after eyeing the coin for years. It will be included in the book on a separate page with its history.
