Chestnut-brown surfaces dominate this very scarce & dramatic repunched date. Streaked with original mint red patina resembling a “tiger’s eye” gem stone, this coin has rich, golden-brown stripes. Wide repunching is evident to the south of the 1 & 8 of the date, with additional repunching on the inner loupes of the 6. There is also Longacre doubling on the design elements on the reverse. PCGS has a population of only 2 examples in AU 58 with only 4 total mint state examples. Over the years, it has proven to be scarcer than the Snow 1, based on this author’s experience.
